Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
A Labour Market Impact Assessment, or LMIA, is often required when a Canadian employer wants to hire a foreign worker and no work permit exemption applies. The LMIA is the employer-side application asking the federal government to assess whether hiring a foreign worker is permitted in the circumstances. If the LMIA is approved, the foreign worker may then be able to apply for an LMIA-based work permit as a separate second step.
Government fees are separate from the legal fee. The LMIA government fee is generally $1,000 per position, payable to ESDC. If a related LMIA-based work permit application is filed, the work permit government fee is generally $155 per applicant. Biometrics are generally $85 if required.
