Citizenship Application (Grant of Canadian Citizenship)

A grant of Canadian citizenship is the formal process by which a permanent resident of Canada applies to become a Canadian citizen. After receiving citizenship, a person holds all the rights and privileges of Canadian citizenship — including the right to vote, hold a Canadian passport, and live and work anywhere in Canada without restriction.

To be eligible, an applicant must: - Be a permanent resident of Canada; - Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) in the five years immediately before the date of application; - Have filed Canadian income taxes for at least three of the five years if required to do so; - Demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French (for applicants between 18 and 54 years of age); and - Demonstrate knowledge of Canada and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship (the citizenship knowledge test, for applicants between 18 and 54).

Minors (under 18) can be included in a parent's citizenship application at a reduced government fee of $100, without a language or knowledge requirement.

IRCC processes citizenship applications through several stages: an initial processing period, a language and knowledge assessment, and ultimately an in-person citizenship ceremony where the oath of citizenship is administered. The entire process typically takes 12 months or more.

Government fees are $649.75 per adult ($530 processing + $119.75 Right of Citizenship fee) and $100 per minor, paid directly to IRCC.

IRCC processing times for citizenship grants are typically 12 months or more from the date of application. This includes the initial review, knowledge test, language interview (if required), and citizenship ceremony. Times vary depending on IRCC caseload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Important Limitations

  • Citizenship cannot be applied for until the physical presence requirement of 1,095 days in five years is met. A precise calculation is included in this service before any application is filed.
  • Tax compliance is a requirement. Applicants who were required to file Canadian income taxes but did not do so in any of the relevant years will not meet the requirements.
  • The Right of Citizenship fee ($119.75) is refundable if the application is refused. The $530 processing fee is not.
  • Applicants between 18 and 54 must pass the citizenship knowledge test and demonstrate language ability. Applicants outside this age range are exempt from these requirements.
